Pushing Through The Pain

I've had a lot of knee surgery, 13 procedures to be exact. I've learned a great deal about pain over the past thirty years. Nothing I have ever experienced compares with having total knee replacements. I thought I was mentally prepared for this procedure. I didn't have any idea what I was getting into. The afternoon that I came out of surgery into recovery it felt like they had sawed off my legs, which when you think about it they did.

The impact of Kindness: Zeeland Community Hospital, a case study.

On September 8, 2010 I entered Zeeland Community Hospital, a small 60 bed hospital in Zeeland, Michigan here in West Michigan near Holland where I live. I was having a bilateral total knee replacement, a procedure that I was not looking forward to. I chose Zeeland Community Hospital for this very significant surgical procedure because I had been a patient there twice previously so I knew what to expect. As you enter this beautiful new facility in large letters facing the front doors is the following statement: "Caring People, Caring for People". These are not just words, the employees of ZCH actually live this out in their daily lives at work.

The 4th of July

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence? Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

Man up!

I watched a baseball game recently between the Detroit Tigers and the Cleveland Indians. Armando Galarraga was pitching for the Tigers. Galarraga was making history as he pitched and struck out batter after batter. Galarraga threw just 88 pitches with 67 of those being strikes. The game was very fast at one hour and forty-two minutes. It was a work of art......until the 9th inning when Jim Joyce the first base umpire called Indian player Jason Donald safe on a base hit. The problem was that Galarraga clearly made it to first base with the ball before the Donald stepped on the bag.

What ever happened to personal responsibility? Make your own music.

I heard from a friend recently that he saw a video of students that were going to protest to their state representatives in Lansing, Michigan because they can't find a job. Then there is the woman that is suing her college alma matter demanding all of the her money back because she couldn't find a job ten weeks after graduation. She failed to mention that her GPA was a meteoric 2.7. What a rocket scientist. Could it possibly be that this woman did not work hard enough to get better grades and therefore no company wants her? What happened to taking personal responsibility.
